CASE STUDY

(Understanding Ethical Dilemmas & Ethical Frameworks)

In the weeks leading up to a crucial state assembly election in India, the political landscape is intensely polarized. Two prominent political leaders, representing opposing parties, have been engaging in a series of heated exchanges.

The exchanges began with Leader ‘A’ making inflammatory statements at a public rally, accusing Leader B’s party of being “anti-national” and “soft on terror”. In retaliation, one of the politician of the political Leader B’s party, during a press conference, used derogatory and abusive language to personally attack Leader A and his family, which is widely circulated on social media platforms. The online content, amplified by party-affiliated “IT cells,” includes fabricated stories and character assassination, further intensifying public outrage and communal tensions.

The traditional news media is divided. Some channels provide extensive airtime to the political mudslinging, framing it as a major election issue. Other outlets, worried about declining ratings and political pressure, downplay the abusive content or frame it as a “he said, she said” issue. Meanwhile, civil society organizations and legal experts raise concerns about the normalization of abusive political discourse and its potential to incite violence and undermine democratic values.
